Using XMLTV grabbers
The XMLTVProject includes two major classes of tools.
* Grabbers -- These tools obtain data in XMLTV format.
* Filters -- These tools modify data in XMLTV format

In this post, we're going to focus on the Grabbers.

NOTE FOR WINDOWS USERS
The xmltv tools are command line tools. Of course you can put them in batch files too (and most folks do!). For now, open a COMMAND PROMPT and get started!

A pre-compiled perl distribution is included in an XMLTV.EXE file. This includes most grabbers and filters! To use it simply download the release file from the XMLTV releases or the ALPHA EXE. Save the file in a directory (safer one without spaces... say c:\xmltv) then use it!

To use xmltv.exe simply prefix the xmltv tool with xmltv.exe (or just xmltv).
for example:
cd \xmltv
xmltv tv_grab_na_dd --configure

WARNING: The first time you run xmltv.exe it will take a long time, this is normal.

CONFIGURING A GRABBER
The Grabbers are very consistent in how to use them. That said, a few are different (tv_grab_zz_sdjson_sqlite comes to mind), so read the messages, just don't hit enter! The Grabbers tend to provide useful defaults for most questions.

The first step is the CONFIGURE step.
grabber --configure
Then answer the questions! yes, it's that easy. You only need to do this once, or when things change. no need to put it in your grabber script.

Once that's done and you're ready to go!

GRABBING LISTINGS
This is even easier, as everything is already configured! The below command will output 7 days to tv.xml

grabber --days 7 --output tv.xml

Leave off --days and you're get that grabber's default value.
Leave off --outout and the outout will be written to STDOUT (in case you want to pipe to a filter!)

That's it! It really is easy.

First use example
This example uses a grabber against Schedules Direct's JSON service. An account is needed (free 7 day trial, no CC needed, so make sure it works for you before paying!). If you're not using windows, leave off the xmltv command.

C:\Users\robert\batch>xmltv tv_grab_zz_sdjson --configure
Timezone is -0500
Cache file for lineups, schedules and programs.
Cache file: [C:\Users\robert/.xmltv/tv_grab_zz_sdjson.cache] <enter> for default
If you are migrating from a different grabber selecting an alternate channel ID format can make the migration easier.
Select channel ID format:
0: Default Format (eg: I12345.json.schedulesdirect.org)
1: tv_grab_na_dd Format (eg: I12345.labs.zap2it.com)
2: MythTV Internal DD Grabber Format (eg: 12345)
Select one: [0,1,2 (default=0)] <enter> for default
As the JSON data only includes the previously shown date normally the XML output should only have the date. However some programs such as older versions of MythTV also need a time.
Select previously shown format:
0: Date Only
1: Date And Time
Select one: [0,1 (default=0)] <enter> for default
Schedules Direct username.
Username: SD username
Schedules Direct password.
Password: SD password
** POST https://json.schedulesdirect.org/20141201/token ==> 200 OK (1s)
** GET https://json.schedulesdirect.org/20141201/status ==> 200 OK
** GET https://json.schedulesdirect.org/20141201/lineups ==> 400 Bad Request (1s)
This step configures the lineups enabled for your Schedules Direct account. It impacts all other configurations and programs using the JSON API with your account. A maximum of 4 lineups can by added to your account. In a later step you will choose which lineups or channels to actually use for this configuration.

ReplayTV Replacement FAQ

Digital Networks North America declared bankruptcy on 2015-07-20. Their guide service probably will never return. You have two solutions to keep using your ReplayTV device.

Using the PercData/LaHo server to provide Guide Data
Some community members have gotten together to offer a simple replacement ReplayTV guide service. (code name "LAst HOpe RNS" (LaHo)).

The LaHo service is provided by Perc Data. You can sign up at Percdata.com.

The cost for the Perc/LaHo service (6-month term) is $21 first ReplayTV, $7 for additional units.

PERC/LaHo do not offer support for dial-up devices.

Using WiRNS to provide Guide Data
WiRNS is a free (as in beer) application that can feed guide data to ReplayTV devices and offers other features. WiRNS can obtain data from any XMLTV source or Schedules Direct. ($25/year for Schedules Direct)

With WiRNS 3.0, all ReplayTV units work fine without Replay's server.

The complexity of a WiRNS solution varies with your ReplayTV unit and configuration. It involves setting up a WiRNS server on a local Windows machine.

Setting the clock on 2k/3k/Showstoppers =
There is a hack available here to add a time set page to your Replay. Doing so involves removing the hard disk and adding programs using a PC.

Once connected to a network (see dialup section), 2k/3k units can also use NTP to set the time. WiRNS can provide the NTP proxy functionality.

Setting the clock on Network Attached 4k/5k Units =
You can set your clock using WiRNS 3.0 or Perc/Laho. Perc/Laho supports setting your clock without signing up for a PERC Data account. (just point your ReplayTV there)

What about Dialup Users
A solution exists where a PC (physical or virtual) is configured as a FREESCO router. The ReplayTV can then dial into the FREESCO router using a phone line, phone line simulator, or even a direct connection. Once connected to the FREESCO router, WiRNS or Laho can be used to update the ReplayTV box.

Such a solution is currently complicated, but eventually step by step directions will be provided. A rough draft of a FREESCO solution is HERE.

What about Activation
All units require registry changes to "undo" things DNNA set in some recent updates. Both WiRNS and Perc/Laho will apply these changes for you. We should even be able to activate a new unit.
